**WEATHER ADVISORY**

Well, the rains sure hit, and, as usual, the west end got it the worst.

**The Bogachiel river has been reported to be at flood stage with predictions of cresting at 10pm tonight (11/21/17)**.

Today, I drove out to Neah Bay and found numerous locations with water over SR112. The Pysht, in its usual places was bad on the way out around noon, but on my return about 4pm. it was really bad. I made it through, but reported the problem as it was clear it wouldn’t get any better.

This is a good reminder to watch these areas covered with water. Large pools on the road can be much deeper than they appear and can cause your car to stall in the middle of a pond. At the very least, you could be faced with serious hydroplaning issues. Worse, like the Pysht area, moving water is especially dangerous and trying to traverse it is not wise. It doesn’t take that much water to float a car and the danger is really high.

So, what’s next? The rains will back off tonight, but it appears by Wednesday night, they’ll fire up again. While it will be neither as much rain, or as long, it’s going to prolong the high water the rivers are experiencing. By Thanksgiving, the rains should diminish to showers and we’ll return to cooler temperatures and more spotty showers. Still, like I said, it will take a bit for the rivers to recede. The Elwha and Dungeness rivers do not appear to be at flood stage at this time, and the Pysht is not monitored. I’ll be watching the hydrology reports over the next day or so and let you know if these levels continue to climb.

Again, watch those flooded areas while driving. Like they say, “Don’t drown, turn around!”

Stay Safe

A gale is blowing here at Neah Bay while Jim Buck briefs the Makah Tribal Council. It’s warm and dry with treats and coffee provided by the tribe.

**WEATHER ADVISORY**

This weekend’s wind took me by surprise. All the forecasts that were relayed to me were “wind advisories for gale winds” and, while gale force are significant, it’s something we are pretty much used to around here.

What is bothering me, is the next couple of days. Today and tonight should be ok, but appears to be the calm before the storm. Heavy rains, heavier than we saw this morning, are expected to hit us Tuesday and last most of the day. This, combined with rising snow levels, are a recipe for rising rivers. With all the wet we have seen, we could develop some minor flooding on our west end rivers like the Bogachiel and Quillayute; and we are seeing a concern for the Dungeness as well. And, the Elwha is pretty much an unknown right now but we need to watch it as well. I also get worried about slides as our ground is so saturated right now so we need to keep an eye on that too.

I haven’t seen any special alerts for us and there has been no reference to high winds, but then, they didn’t forecast those winds on Sunday either, so I am just throwing it out there that we are watching this closely. Added to the Tuesday storm, is another one with a ton of rain that could come in late Wednesday and last into thanksgiving before the weather turns back to more typical wet, showery and cool November stuff.

I’ll watch it closely and let you know if something more definitive comes out.

Stay safe, and dry!

**THEFT OF MAMMOTH TUSK - PUBLIC'S HELP REQUESTED**

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, Deputy Clark took a report of a stolen “Mammoth Tusk” which was taken from the debris left at the house fire on 20 Thornton Drive in Sequim. The item is very unique and should be easily identifiable. Attached is a photo of the tusk.

It was originally found in Alaska in the 1950’s by the family and predates any laws regarding the sales of ivory.

If you have any information regarding this theft, please email Deputy Clark at: or call Dispatch at .

**WEATHER ADVISORY**

So, we’re looking at a second round of wind to swirl up starting, well, right about now for the coastal areas. This should last until about 3pm or so. The Port Angeles area has been wet, but spared from any major winds. However, out west, you folks have fought power outages and more out your way, and I understand the farther east you go toward Port Townsend, the heavier the wind gets as well.

Things should settle down by dinner time, but we are watching a system that could give us another bout of wind and rain tomorrow (Tuesday) so stay tuned. After that though, while precipitation will continue, it won’t be as heavy and the winds will leave us. Temperatures will drop into the lower forties so count on that mountain snow but I haven’t heard of any freezing threats down below here.

Many of us have generators at our disposal for use during power outages. This is great for keeping food from spoiling, perhaps supplying heat or, of course, running the TV when the Seahawks or Game of Thrones or something is on. But please, use safety when utilizing gas powered generators. They can be very dangerous if not ventilated so be careful. Here’s a link that may give you some ideas and thoughts about using the generators…..stay safe.
