Recently Auburn bike officers joined the Cascade Bicycle Club on one of their many free group rides. The ride began at Green River Cyclery and the Busted Bike Cafe in Auburn and utilized city streets, bicycle lanes and multi-use trails and covered approximately 20 miles. The group stopped at Starbucks in the City of Sumner where officers answered questions about cycling and spoke about topics such as traffic laws, bicycle equipment and cycling safety.

On Friday, November 17th, Commanders Mark Caillier, Dan O’Neil and Sergeants Brian Williams & James Frith became the latest Auburn Police Department staff to attend and graduate from the prestigious Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command from Northwestern University.

The course is an intensive ten-week program that prepares law enforcement sergeants and commanders for senior positions by combining academic principles with practical applications. The course curriculum focuses on Budgeting, Contemporary Policing, Decision Making and Problem Solving, Employee Relations, Evaluating Products and Services, Executive Image, Grant Writing, Human Resources, Leadership and Management, Media Relations, Organizational Behavior, Planning and Policies, Project Management, Resource Allocation, Statistics, and Traffic.

Chief Bob Lee, A.C. Bill Pierson and Mayor Nancy Backus are so proud of this awesome group and are very anxious to see what new ideas they will introduce to advance the Auburn Police Department into the future. This premiere leadership course is one of several that the department strongly supports for all Civilian Supervisors, Sergeants and Command Staff. Over the last 4 years all but 1 Civilian Supervisor and 3 newly promoted Police Sergeants have completed a 3-week course in Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO). This curriculum is based off a West Point leadership course and has been modified to address leadership in civilian law enforcement. In addition, 4 of the 6 Command Staff positions at APD have attended the 11 week FBI training in Quantico Virginia.

Congratulations Mark, Dan, Brian and James!

Today we recognize a great police officer and prior Chief of Police. Chief Jim Kelly was hired as a police officer for Auburn in May of 1979. Prior to coming to Auburn, Chief Kelly started his career in Ellensburg, WA in 1976. He has held almost every assignment at the police department and was one of the first SWAT officers at the agency. Chief Kelly was appointed Chief by Mayor Chuck Booth in 1999 when the agency needed leadership. As one of the few Chiefs who worked his way through the ranks at the department, he played a large role in developing a strategy for succession planning that is still practiced to this day. Chief Kelly had a very impressive career for 34 years, of those he was Chief of Police for eleven years retiring in 2010.

Chief Kelly is still serving today, but as an Assistant Director for a regional misdemeanor jail (SCORE). Chief, thank you for your service, you clearly made your mark at APD that will be remembered for a long time.

Soooo..... we missed Throwback Thursday yesterday but it was for a really good reason.

Yesterday afternoon Mayor Nancy Backus and Auburn PD had the pleasure of swearing in our newest entry-level officer. City of Auburn, please welcome Officer Stout! Helena just completed the rigorous law-enforcement Academy at Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC).

We are so excited to have Officer Stout join our ranks and we hope you are too. If you see her out on the street today for her first shift, please wave or say hi.
