BETHLEHEM COPS TO SERVE THANKSGIVING TURKEY……NO “FOWL” PLAY SUSPECTED

Last year, two dozen Bethlehem Police Officers served Thanksgiving dinner to several hundred people at the New Bethany Ministries Soup Kitchen on the south side of Bethlehem. Many of these people are low income and/or homeless. Some stay at the shelter. Some live on the street.

The Bethlehem Police Department will be continuing this service this year. We are looking to serve Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at the New Bethany Ministries Soup Kitchen at West Third Street and Wyandotte Street, in Bethlehem.

A turkey dinner and other foods will be served between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm. Officers will be on scene in the kitchen cooking and getting ready starting at 7:00 am Tuesday morning. Last year, Bethlehem Officers served approximately 200- 300 people.

The local media is invited to attend and enjoy the event.

DOMESTIC ASSUALT
SUSPECT BARRICADES HIMSELF IN HOUSE

On Saturday evening, November 18, 2017, at 7:17 pm, the Bethlehem Police 911 Center received a 911 call about a domestic assault. The female victim, age 36, who resided at 917 E. Mechanic Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Northampton County, fled her residence after being assaulted by a male. The female victim fled to a neighbor’s house requesting help.

Bethlehem Police Patrol Units responded to 905 E. Mechanic Street and 917 E. Mechanic Street. The female victim was located and taken by City Paramedics to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment. She is being treated for facial and neck injuries, and knife wounds to her one hand.

Bethlehem Officers went to 917 E. Mechanic Street. A male was located in the house and refused to come out. The male was yelling and screaming. Patrol Officer James Joniec, a member of the Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, was able to make verbal contact with the male. The male would calm down, then become agitated and yell. This went on for about an hour and a half.

The Bethlehem Police Department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) arrived and took over negotiations. The male continued his calm and then agitated demeanor. The male was in possession of a yellow razor utility knife. He held the knife to his throat yelling and cursing at the Officers. After another half hour or more of negotiations, the male came to the front door to yell, whereupon the ERT was able to utilize a Taser and Less Lethal rounds to incapacitate him and take him into custody. The male was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center – Muhlenberg Campus for treatment.

The male, identified as THADIUS BANKS, age 30, will be charged with Aggravated Assault, Terroristic Threats, Resisting Arrests and Assault by Strangulation. BANKS will be arraigned by Bethlehem Detectives later in the evening.

No other information is available at this time.

Thank You.
