Bail and Bondsman
An accused is allowed to be temporarily released from jail while awaiting trial if the court grants him bail. This means that to be released, he will need to pledge money to the court that will serve as insurance that he doesn’t flee while he’s out of jail. If he violates this condition, the money pledged to the court will be forfeited and he will be branded as a fugitive.
If an individual is unable to post bail due to financial difficulties, he can secure the services of a bondsman. A bondsman is an individual who acts as a surety on behalf of the defendant. This means that he will be held responsible by the court for paying the bail amount if the defendant fails to show up in court at his trial. The bondsman usually charges a non-refundable fee, around 10% of the bail amount.
