According to federal law, sex offenders must submit their information to local law enforcement which is then entered into the state sex offender registry and the national sex offender registry. These databases are used to monitor the movements of this kind of offender in order to increase public safety and awareness. A sex offender is a person who has been found guilty of a sex crime such as rape, prostitution, and child pornography. Anyone who wants to locate sex offenders living in Wayne County can visit the Sheriff’s Alert page. Bear in mind that there may be records in the database that are no longer current, listing last known addresses. This is because not all offenders obey the registration law.
Bail and Bondsman
An individual charged with a crime can get released from custody while awaiting trial once bail has been posted. Bail is the money required by the court to be lodged with them in exchange for the defendant’s release. This will be used to guarantee the defendant’s appearance in court during the trial. The money will be returned to the defendant, minus court fees, if he appears at all of his scheduled court dates. Failure to appear will result in the bail getting forfeited.
A defendant who cannot afford bail can hire a bondsman to act as a surety. The bondsman’s fee is usually 10% of the bail amount and cannot be refunded.
