Bail and Bondsman

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is responding to a fatal crash where a semi and car hit each other on Old US 33, between Elk Park Dr and LaRue.

Please avoid the area, as the road will be shut down for the next few hours, with the exception for employees going to and leaving their place of employment close to the crash site.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department PASSDOWN

The following activity runs from November 13th through November 19th and officers from all Teams 1-4 responded to 907 calls for service over this time period, with an average of 7 officers on duty at a time.

On November 17 at approximately 5:34 am a three vehicle collision occurred on County Road 40, west of County Road 17. A 2014 Nissan Juke tried passing a 2006 GMC Sierra, both traveling east on CR 17, when the Nissan Juke then collided head on with a 1997 Chevy Silverado, that was traveling west on CR 17. The passenger in the Nissan Juke received severe head and neck injuries that were life threatening and was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital to later be transported to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where the passenger was pronounced deceased.

While our Patrol Officers respond to calls for service, Corrections Officers from Teams A, B, C, and D were responsible for each inmate’s status and location as well as their health and wellbeing, all while maintaining order within the facility.
This is no small feat, as there was an average of 920 inmates housed in the correctional complex in the above mentioned time period with an average of 13 officers on duty at a time. There were also 146 inmates booked into the facility and 149 individuals were released within this time span.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the public’s help in locating a 66 year old male who was reported as missing. Dennis Smith Sr. was last seen between 10:30am and 3:30pm on Friday, November 17, 2017 in the 50000 block of Manhatten Dr., Elkhart. Dennis was last seen operating his maroon 2001 GMC Savanna conversion van with an Indiana license plate number 595MDP and paint flaking from the hood.
