A big thank you to Judge Cruz for helping out at our domestic violence forum last week. With the help of Judge Cruz and some awesome kids from East Aurora High School we were able partner with Mutual Ground to present this particular program in Spanish.

Be Thankful for Your Seat Belt!

Thanksgiving is near, and for many that means traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. No matter how far you’re driving for the holiday, whether it’s down the road to pick up a pumpkin pie or hundreds of miles to see a distant relative, you could be involved in a crash. If you or anyone in your vehicle is not wearing their seat belt, they are at a much greater risk of being killed. Being a good driver isn’t an effective defense against a drunk or aggressive driver.

It is well known that Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year. More cars on the road present the potential for more crashes. More crashes lead to more fatalities. You don’t have to be one of them.

During the Thanksgiving weekend last year, 11 people were killed in crashes on Illinois roads; more than half of those occupants were not wearing their seat belts.

Most roadway deaths are completely preventable. Excessive speed, driving drunk or under the influence of drugs and not wearing seat belts pose a danger to your life. It’s time to act and prevent one of the nation’s biggest killers: motor vehicle crashes.

That is why the Kane County Sheriff’s Office is joining safety advocates nationwide to spread the message about the importance of seat belts to prevent these tragedies from occurring. Many Americans know of at least one person who has been killed in a crash, but too many people still think it can’t happen to them.

This Thanksgiving, there should be no more excuses: Click It or Ticket. The Kane County Sherriff’s Office wants all drivers and passengers, front or back seat, day or night, to buckle up. If you’re traveling with children, remember that they are required to ride in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8. Advocates recommend using these seats until children have reached the manufacturer’s posted height and weight limit, because seat belts are designed to fit adult bodies.

The Kane County Sherriff’s Office urges you to support local and state law enforcement in our efforts to stop dangerous driving behaviors and join the Illinois Department of Transportation’s mission of Driving Zero Fatalities to a Reality.

Our Thanksgiving wish this year is that everyone will realize the life-saving benefits of wearing a seat belt and driving safely. In less time than it takes you to slice that pie, pass the gravy or call someone to say “Happy Thanksgiving,” you can do something powerful, smart and effective: You can make sure everyone in your vehicle is wearing a seat belt. You’ll be thankful you did.
