Records maintained by the Probate Court of Mobile County touch on lives of county residents more directly and frequently than other kind of records. The Judge of Probate of Mobile County has been responsible for maintaining public records since 1812. The records are a rich source of information for researchers, attorneys, surveyors, genealogists and historians. The first microfilming of the Probate Court’s documents was done in August, 1948, by a microfilm team from the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Subsequently, the Probate Court began operating its own Micrographic Section on September 15, 1958. In 1992, this section became the first micrographics laboratory in the state to be certified by the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
